Recent Poll of Corporate Workers Reflects Need for Electronic Communication Control
New York, NY - April 03, 2007
Orchestria, the leader in Electronic Communication Control (ECC), announced today the results of a survey regarding the electronic communication habits of March Madness betting pools. The survey confirms that despite the highly regulated nature of business applications in today's workplace, e-mail, blogs and Instant Messaging are still largely control free. More than 70 percent of survey respondents pointed to e-mail as their primary method of communication around March Madness tournament pools.
The research, commissioned by Orchestria, was conducted during the week of March 26 - the last week of March Madness - via a web-based survey interface to ensure accurate compilation of response data. Notable findings from the survey include:
- More than seventy percent of respondents used e-mail as the method of communicating among pool members
- Fifty percent of respondents said their March Madness pool runs a chat room
- The majority of respondents used their personal e-mail addresses for March Madness correspondence
While March Madness communications are seemingly harmless, the survey exemplifies the fact that e-mail, the most widely-used business application today, is inherently open to abuse. The fact that a majority of those surveyed used both corporate and personal e-mail addresses while at the office shows the ease in which confidential data can be sent outside an organization
.
"It is clear from the survey that enterprises face a serious challenge in controlling the electronic actions of employees. Our survey on March Madness highlights that even though organizations attempt to control risk by limiting access to business applications, electronic communication such as email, IM, the web and blogging are still largely uncontrolled," said Bo Manning, CEO of Orchestria. "The lack of good controls results in employees engaging in non-business related activities as well as the possibility of messages being sent that subject the business to unacceptable risk."
